IW Violin Academy – Method and Curriculum

Our two offline locations are at Dharmawangsa Square and near Central Park Mall in collaboration with House of Piano Jakarta. 
We provide practice room with Grand piano and recital hall for students concerts.

We also offer online lessons via zoom for international and remote students.

Prices on request and payments are scheduled monthly.

Lesson Structure

Each 60-min lesson (online or offline) includes 3 basic elements:

  1. Scales, Arpeggios, Double Stops
  2. Etudes, Caprices
  3. Concerto, Sonata, Virtuosic piece, Bach

Practice requirement:

  • Minimum 1.5 hours per day
  • Maintain a practice diary

Example Diary:

  • Scales: 20 min
  • Etude/Caprice: 30 min (slow to fast)
  • Repertoire: 40 min (5-step method)

Beginner
Age 4–6:

  • Beginner scales: Barbara Barber
  • Etudes: Wohlfahrt, Kayser
  • Pieces: Suzuki Books 1–6

Elementary
Age 7–9:

  • Advanced scales: Barbara Barber
  • Etudes: Kreutzer, Rode, Fiorillo, Wieniawski, easy Paganini
  • Pieces: Kreisler Prelude Allegro, Vivaldi 4 Seasons

Intermediate
Age 10–12:

  • Scales: Carl Flesch
  • Etudes: Kreutzer, Rode, Dont, Fiorillo, Wieniawski, Paganini
  • Concerti: Bruch, Wieniawski 2
  • Virtuoso pieces: Wieniawski Scherzo Tarantelle, Sarasate

Advanced
Age 13–15:

  • Scales: Carl Flesch
  • Etudes: Wieniawski, Paganini, Locatelli, Ernst
  • Concerti: Lalo, Wieniawski 1, Paganini, Tchaikovsky
  • Pieces: Waxman Carmen Fantasy, Ernst Last Rose
  • Easier Sonatas/Sonatinas: Mozart, Dvorak
  • Bach: selected Sonatas & Partitas

Professional
Age 16–18:

  • Scales: Carl Flesch
  • Etudes: as needed, complete Paganini, contemporary studies
  • Concerti: Sibelius, Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Shostakovich
  • Bach: complete Solo Sonatas
  • Sonatas: Beethoven, Schumann, Franck

Methodology & Focus

  • Early years: develop technical proficiency, play virtuosic repertoire
  • After age 16: focus on personality, individuality, interpretive maturity, chamber music
  • Goal: technical freedom to achieve ease, dexterity, and musical curiosity

Teachers

Our teachers are selected international performers with degrees from schools such as the College of Music Berlin "Hanns Eisler", the Curtis Institute of Music, and Chengdu University. They follow the Iskandar Widjaja Violin Method closely.
